The name of Akhal-Teke originated from Turkmen language, 'Ahalteke', meaning breed of horse from Turkmenistan. Akhal Teke Horse Breeds are well known for their speed as well and high endurance for long journey. People call this animal the "golden-horses" as they are considered to be one of the oldest surviving horse breeds on this planet. Based on recent data, 3,500 Akhal-Tekes breeds are currently there in the world. Most of them are in Turkmenistan and Russia. A number of Akhal Teke Horse Breeds could be found in Europe, Australia and North America.
What makes Akhal Teke breeds so different from others? In general, Akhal Teke Horse Breeds are 14.3 up to 16.3 hands tall. The most famous feature of this animal is a golden buckskin or palomino color with particular metallic sheen. The recognized colors are mostly black, bay, chestnut, cremello, palomino, perlino, and also grey.
The natural metallic bloom of its coat is also considered as one of the most notable characteristic of Akhal Teke breeds. Although some still argue that the color pattern of Akhal Teke are camouflage in the desert, its unique features still makes this breed special among others.
The harness of Turkmenistan lands has been influencing much the way these Akhal Teke breeds live. Tough and resilient breeding are some of the evidences since most of the horses in the land live without much food and water. Yet, the condition has been making the Akhal Teke breeds strong for doing sports. In 1935, the great endurance of Akhal Teke breeds was proven by Turkmen riders who did long March equal 2500 miles from Ashgabat to Moscow. The journey took about 84 days, including a 3 day crossing desert period. Since then, Akhal Teke breeds are really reliable for their strong endurance besides a title of being show jumper as well in front of spectators in the stadium.
